Los Debutantes (2003) / Chile / Erotic drama
Los debutantes is a 2003 Chilean drama film directed by Andrés Waissbluth, who co-wrote the screenplay with Julio Rojas. The film stars Antonella Ríos, Néstor Cantillana, Juan Pablo Miranda, and Alejandro Trejo. It tells the story of two brothers, Silvio and Víctor, who move to Santiago after the death of their parents. Silvio works to support his younger brother’s education, taking him to a strip club for his 17th birthday, where both become entangled with Gracia, a dancer who is also the mistress of the club’s powerful and dangerous owner, Don Pascual.
The narrative unfolds from three distinct perspectives—Víctor, Silvio, and Gracia—revealing layers of manipulation, desire, and vulnerability. This nonlinear storytelling approach, reminiscent of films like Pulp Fiction, explores the emotional and moral complexities of each character, culminating in a tragic climax.
The film was Chile’s official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 76th Academy Awards but was not nominated. It received critical attention for its gritty portrayal of urban life, bold erotic content, and strong performances, particularly by Ríos. It also sparked discussion due to a scene involving unsimulated acts.
