Eros Eterna (1977)
other title: Seibo Kannon daibosatsu / 聖母観音大菩薩
Japanese erotic cult classic Eros Eterna (original title: Seibo Kannon daibosatsu / 聖母観音大菩薩, 1977), directed by Kōji Wakamatsu, is a provocative pinku eiga / arthouse drama starring Eiko Matsuda (from In the Realm of the Senses) as an immortal priestess/nun who has lived for centuries and desperately seeks death.
The story blends Japanese folklore (the legendary Happyaku Bikuni mermaid-cursed nun), social commentary, and explicit eroticism. The immortal woman wanders a seaside village, encountering men from all walks of life (an elderly hibakusha, an Ainu criminal, a radical leftist, a wealthy predator, and others). She “saves” them through sex — sometimes consensual, sometimes coercive/rape-like — while a parallel subplot follows a young shrine maiden and her boyfriend. Themes of immortality, sex, death, melancholy, and salvation make it one of Wakamatsu’s most artistic yet transgressive works (90 minutes, atmospheric photography by Hideo Ito).
Key erotic highlights (softcore pink film style with explicit nudity and simulated sex; frequent full-frontal and body exposure):
• Eiko Matsuda (lead, voluptuous and central): Multiple full-frontal and breasts scenes across extended sex sequences with five different men + one lesbian scene. She appears completely naked in passionate, melancholic encounters, often emphasizing her body as both salvation and curse.
• Eri Kanuma & Atsuko Asano (supporting young women, noted for bare attractions): Breasts, topless, and nude moments in secondary erotic sequences (Atsuko Asano was barely 16 during filming).
• Ensemble: Additional topless, bush, and sex scenes in the interconnected vignettes, with lingering, artistic shots typical of 1970s Japanese pink cinema.
