The Story of Piera 1983 – Isabelle Huppert & Hanna Schygulla Full Frontal Mother-Daughter Scenes

The Story of Piera (1983), original title Storia di Piera, is Marco Ferreri’s raw and unsettling drama based on the real-life experiences of actress Piera Degli Esposti. Isabelle Huppert plays Piera, growing up under the influence of her free-spirited but deeply unstable mother Eugenia (Hanna Schygulla) and a distant father (Marcello Mastroianni).

What makes the film truly provocative is the intensely intimate, often sexual bond between mother and daughter. Boundaries dissolve completely — the two share nude beach moments, bathe together, and cross into physical territory that still feels shocking. Both Huppert and Schygulla appear fully nude, with clear full-frontal shots and natural body hair, in scenes that treat the taboo mother-daughter relationship with unusual openness rather than exploitation. The result is one of the more disturbing and memorable European dramas of the early 80s, where love, desire and family become dangerously entangled.
